HISTORY

In 1867, Augusta Institute was established in the basement of Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, GA. The school’s primary purpose was to prepare Black men for the ministry and teaching. Today, Augusta Institute is Morehouse College, which is located on a 66-acre campus in Atlanta, GA.  Augusta Institute was founded by Rev. William Jefferson White, an Augusta Baptist minister, cabinetmaker and journalist, with the encouragement of Rev. Richard C. Coulter, a former slave from Augusta, and Rev. Edmund Turney, organizer of the National Theological Institute for educating freedmen in Washington, D.C.  Rev. Dr. Joseph T. Robert, trained minister and physician, was appointed the Institute’s first president. In 1879, the institution changed its name to Atlanta Baptist Seminary; in 1897, it became Atlanta Baptist College; and in 1913 it was then named Morehouse College in honor of Henry L. Morehouse, the corresponding secretary of the Northern Baptist Home Mission Society.

INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY

Funding will support two significant efforts tied to the enhancement of Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) implementation and evaluation in the Division of Science and Mathematics.  The expansion of the PLTL evaluation to include detailed qualitative and quantitative evaluation of each discipline, including an assessment of the direct impact of PLTL on students in each course in which it is offered and the discipline-related challenges that cannot be addressed in the broader evaluation. The expanded evaluation will include assessment of peer leader and faculty performance to provide greater information about the effectiveness of specific workshop content, as well as specific peer leaders and faculty members.  This evaluation will allow more specialized recommendations and interventions to support the effectiveness of implementation in each class and discipline. Further, in efforts to disseminate the model, Morehouse proposes the development of six training videos, one in each discipline, to demonstrate an actual PLTL workshop.
